This is one of my favourite if not my very favourite books, not just from this genre but overall. I had no real expectations for the book because I didn't *really* know what it was about, but I was hooked on it within the first few pages. I cared about every single one of the characters - even when I hated a character, I desperately wanted to know how things would end for them. The storytelling in this book is next level. I loved getting to know these different women and I laughed at some parts, cried at others, and, at all times, felt connected to the people I was reading about. You really feel what they're feeling and if you don't cry at certain parts, I refuse to believe you're human. :P I got a wonderful sense of the community and era, which felt doubly good since I just finished another book not long ago that, despite being a romance set in a historical setting with an interesting premise, was flat and totally unenjoyable and sounded completely fake. THIS right here is how you do historical drama. The flushed out characters, vivid setting, and engaging storytelling make this a 10/10 for me. The people were believable, complex, and genuine. The highs and lows were played with expert emotion. By the time I got to the part in the book where things really started changing (I won't put any spoilers here), I literally couldn't put it down. I read the rest of the book in one sitting. Just finished it, in fact. And now I'm off to watch the movie. I honestly can't get enough of this story and only wish there was a sequel of some kind that could show you a peek into these women's later lives.
